Our Story

It started with these two.

MobilGrain was originally founded by two brothers, Lavern and Sheldon Affleck.

MobilGrain was originally founded by two brothers, Lavern and Sheldon Affleck.

2005

A new type of grain terminal.

It started out as a transportable grain terminal that could be placed alongside any rail siding to collect, clean, and transfer product. Along with its unique ability to move where industry demand was, the facility featured unheard-of-before traceability tech, leaving very little room for human error. Throughout this phase, the brothers gained valuable experience working with the various railroad companies.

2009

Last chance for Last Mountain.

When the opportunity presented itself to purchase track from Regina to Davidson (that would otherwise be abandoned and ripped up), they took it. Agreements and legalities ensued, the first locomotives were purchased, and Last Mountain Railway was born. This meant relocating MobilGrain’s existing grain terminal and setting up additional grain collection sites along the 85 miles.

2011

Big skies ahead.

After several years of steady operations with the shortline railroad model, MobilGrain then purchased a second, 250-mile long railroad which was named Big Sky Rail. Working with an existing grain company on the line, and adding several customers plus a few grain collection sites of their own, they were able to ramp up railroad traffic. CN provided running rights to connect the 2 railroads.

2012

Access to port.

Next, MobilGrain purchased a port facility in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Named MobilEx Terminal, this efficient, loop-track, conveyor-unload system enabled direct transfer of product from railcar to ship, which worked well for the unit trains MobilGrain was transporting. The facility handles mostly grain and potash, but also offloads salt for distribution to various companies.

2015

Kind of a big deal.

In 2015, the group of companies under Mobil Capital (MobilGrain, Last Mountain Railway, Big Sky Rail, MobilEx Terminal) was sold to AGT Foods, a global but Saskatchewan-founded company that processes, trades, and exports pulses and staple foods. AGT opted to leave the existing management team in place and continue to operate the companies under their original names.

TODAY

The adventure continues.
